Agent Skills vs Prompts: What Is the Difference?

A prompt is something you say. A skill is something you package. Both are useful, but they solve different problems: prompts are fast and flexible; skills are reusable and consistent. The confusion starts when people use the words interchangeably.

The one-line difference

A prompt is a one-off instruction sent to a model. A skill is a structured package that tells an agent when to use a workflow, how to execute it, what output to produce and where to stop.

A skill often contains prompts, but it is larger than them. The package can include examples, reference files, scripts, checklists and rules that would be too long or too fragile to paste into every conversation.

What a skill has that a prompt usually lacks

The difference is not just length. A good skill makes the workflow inspectable and repeatable:

  • A trigger description that tells the agent when the skill applies.
  • Ordered steps with checkpoints and a defined stopping point.
  • A clear output format the buyer can recognise.
  • Examples of good and bad work.
  • Boundaries that prevent the agent from drifting into adjacent tasks.

When a prompt is enough

Use a prompt for a one-off rewrite, a quick brainstorm, a summary or a question you will not ask again. Prompts are ideal when the context is short, the output is easy to judge and the cost of inconsistency is low.

You do not need a skill for every task. Packaging a one-off request adds overhead without adding leverage.

When to turn a prompt into a skill

Turn a prompt into a skill when you repeat the same job, when several people need the same quality bar, or when the output has to follow a specific structure. A skill is also useful when the work requires files, examples or a multi-step process that a chat message cannot carry reliably.

Another signal is handoff. If you keep explaining the same context to a new person or a new agent session, that context probably belongs in a skill.

How to convert a prompt into a skill

Start with the prompt that already works. Add the missing scaffolding: when to use it, the ordered steps, the output format, examples and boundaries. Test it on three real inputs and tighten the instructions where the output drifts.

Then decide whether the skill is private or publishable. A private skill can include your own context; a public marketplace skill needs a clear buyer, a visible output and a price that makes sense to someone who has never met you.

Where to see real examples

The agent-skills examples guide breaks down real patterns, from research briefs to video workflows. Capafy’s marketplace shows the commercial version: packaged skills with descriptions, prices, ratings and sales counts.

If you want to build your own, read the SKILL.md guide and the seller guide. If you only want to use one, browse the free and trial agents first and compare the outputs.

FAQ

Agent Skills vs Prompts — frequently asked questions

01Is a skill just a long prompt?

No. A skill can contain prompts, but it also packages triggers, steps, examples, files and boundaries. The structure is what makes it reusable and easier to review.

02Do I need a skill for every task?

No. Use a prompt for a one-off task. Use a skill when the job repeats, when several people need the same quality bar or when the workflow has multiple steps.

03Can I turn an existing prompt into a skill?

Yes. Start with the prompt that works, then add the trigger, steps, output format, examples and boundaries. Test it on real inputs before publishing.

04What is SKILL.md?

SKILL.md is the core instruction file in a skill package. It describes when the skill applies, what the agent should do and what output it should produce.

05Are skills only for developers?

No. Skills can package marketing, research, design, finance, video and operations workflows. The common requirement is a repeatable job with a clear output.
